Republican Ohio Senate candidate Mike Gibbons took to Twitter to celebrate an endorsement by one of the insurrectionists from the Jan. 6 Capitol attack who was caught on tape appearing to agree with a call to “start assassinating people.”

Gibbons, the leading candidate in the Republican Senate primary as of most recent polling, tweeted his thanks last week to Mario Innocenzi, an Ohio barber and chair of the Geauga County and Northeast Ohio Conservative Club.

Innocenzi sparked media attention when he Facebook live-streamed himself marching around Washington, D.C. with a group of Trump supporters from Ohio on Jan. 6. Before the rally descended into mobs of people storming the Capitol, Innocenzi appears to say in his livestream, “I say we just rush the Capitol.” Then, a voice near Innocenzi can be heard in the video saying, “Start assassinating people,” to which Innocenzi responded, “Right.”

Innocenzi has since deleted the video from his Facebook page, and he denied ever making those comments in a FOX 8 Cleveland interview. FOX 8 reported that Innocenzi’s video was referred to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Cleveland, though Innocenzi claims law enforcement have not contacted him about it.

Gibbons hasn’t made any comments on the Capitol attack, though he did get into a heated confrontation with Josh Mandel, another Republican candidate in the Ohio Senate race, during a debate last Friday. The race has been intensifying as the candidates fight for a potential Trump endorsement, with candidates finding every opportunity to advertise their pro-Trump credibility, NPR reported.

Gibbons’ team did not respond to a request for comment by publishing time.
