After a formerly tight race in the Michigan primary election, Tudor Dixon came out on top as the GOP nominee for governor, the Associated Press projected Tuesday night.

The AP made the projection at 8:41 p.m. CST. As of 8:55 p.m. EST, Dixon had over 40% of the vote, which was 20 percentage points over the next-highest candidate, businessman Kevin Rinke.

Dixon is the former host of “America’s Voice Live,” a conservative cable news show on Real America’s Voice that discusses politics. Much of her campaign has been centered around pandemic restrictions and “indoctrination” of children in schools. Last month, Dixon also clarified her view that abortion should be illegal in all cases except to save the life of the mother.

Four main candidates were leading in the polls and fundraising going into the election. Among these were Rinke, Ryan Kelley ― a real estate agent the FBI arrested in June for connections to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot ― and chiropractor Garrett Soldano.

Dixon will face incumbent Gretchen Whitmer (D) in the general election. Whitmer is seeking a second term.
