Michigan GOP congressional candidate scrubs website of anti-abortion stance, adds deflection instead
Tom Barrett, the GOP nominee in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, recently removed the “values” section of his campaign website that contained information about his anti-abortion beliefs.
When asked about the purpose of removing this section, Barrett told the Detroit News that he had no knowledge of the website being changed.
“I don’t watch my own website every day, so I don’t know why,” Barrett told the Detroit News. “But I am sure we probably were updating things based upon the issues that were most salient right now, which are inflation, crime, border security. Those are really the four pillars that are the leading issues that voters are most concerned with.”
This section of the Barrett campaign website was replaced in its entirety: “I am a Christian and I believe our elected leaders have a responsibility to represent the values our faith teaches. Protecting individual rights includes protecting the unborn. Ashley and I have been involved in the pro-life movement our entire lives and as an elected leader, I will always work to protect life from conception.”
A new “Life” section added to the “Issues” page Monday did not give any policy proposals and instead turned to criticizing Slotkin’s pro-abortion stance.
Data does not support Barrett’s claim that abortion is not one of the main issues today.
Typically in a midterm year, whichever party holds power loses ground in Congressional elections. However, polling shows that Democratic voters seem revitalized because of abortion access issues.. Since the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision, Democrats have campaigned aggressively on supporting the right for women to choose. In addition to polling, voters in Kansas showed the unpopularity of anti-abortion policy when a ballot measure was overwhelmingly voted down to preserve abortion rights in a traditionally red state.
Barrett is facing incumbent Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D) for the seat. Slotkin has made abortion a cornerstone of her reelection attempt and been critical of Barrett’s “extreme” beliefs on abortion.
