According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago has been selected as the host city for the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

The convention will be hosted by the Democratic National Committee the weekend of August 19-22 of 2024 at the United Center. Thousands of delegates will be drawn to the city to select their nominees for President and Vice President of the United States.

The last time Chicago held the event was in 1996, when Bill Clinton and Al Gore were selected to run for their second term. Chicago also holds the record for the most conventions (25) held since the first DNC in 1852.

President Joe Biden is expected to run again, although he has not made an official announcement yet. Spiritual self-help author Marianne Williamson and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are the two confirmed candidates on the Democratic side, while former President Donald Trump, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are confirmed candidates on the Republican side.

Chicago outbid Atlanta and New York due to its proximity to Midwest battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio, all of which are routinely important for presidential election. Michigan swung hard to the left in the 2022 midterms, with Democrats secured a trifecta for the first time in decades. Wisconsin has been heavily influenced by its Republican legislature, but the election of the liberal Janet Protasiewicz give the Wisconsin Supreme Court a path to influence policy.

Other candidates rumored to run on the Democratic side are California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
