Despite intense campaigning from the Republican Party of Virginia led by Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), Democrats in the states are projected to now control both legislative chambers and block a GOP state government trifecta.

Decision Desk reported Democratic majorities in the state Senate and state House of Delegates late Tuesday night. Democrats reclaimed the Senate as of 11:30 p.m. EST and were two seats away out of 11 from taking the House of Delegates out of Republican control.

Would the GOP have gained a trifecta, they likely would have restarted an abortion ban push. After the Supreme Court of the United States repealed Roe v. Wade in the summer of 2022, Virginia Republicans pushed a 15-week abortion ban, which legislative state Senate Democrats defeated.

Youngkin’s Spirit of Virginia PAC raised just under $19 million for legislative battles, according to Virginia Public Access Project. But with both chambers in control of Democrats, the national Republican icon’s legislative agenda will likely come to a halt.

“Despite Glenn Youngkin’s attempts to take complete control of the state government and pass an extreme abortion ban, Virginia voters just sent a resounding message: they won’t allow MAGA extremists to rip away their freedoms,” said Democratic National Committee chairman Jaime Harrison in a statement after the Viriginia Democrats’ win.
