On Thursday, the Supreme Court of the United States declined to block the assault weapons ban in Illinois, leaving it as law.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed the ban into law on Jan. 10, and the law prohibits the sale and possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines throughout the state. Pritzker was adamant about banning assault weapons throughout his reelection campaign, and it passed the Illinois state chambers on party lines in the first weeks of 2023.

This is the second time the Supreme Court has declined to block Illinois’ ban in wake of another record year for mass shootings in the United States.
