The Democratic National Committee (DNC) launched a billboard campaign criticizing former President Donald Trump’s efforts to limit reproductive rights after the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision to effectively limit access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in the state.

“Donald Trump is the reason why cruel abortion bans across the country are ripping away women’s reproductive freedom and threatening access to IVF for Americans trying to start a family,” DNC spokesperson Rhyan Lake said in a statement.

The DNC launched the billboard campaign across multiple states, including Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

During his presidency, Trump appointed Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, giving the court a 6-3 conservative majority. All six conservatives overturned federal abortion protections in 2022 in the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, opening the door for the GOP to not only pass abortion bans at the state level, but advocate for contraception and IVF restrictions. In his concurring opinion for the Dobbs case, conservative Justice Clarence Thomas said the court should “consider” looking at rulings that uphold contraception access, gay marriage and sexual freedom.

The Alabama court ruled that couples are allowed to sue fertility clinics who have destroyed frozen embryos for wrongful death on the grounds that the embryos are human lives. This resulted in fertility clinics throughout the state halting IVF services for fear of prosecution. After the ruling, Trump took to his platform Truth Social and advocated for IVF and making it easier to have children.
