On Wednesday, the Republican-dominated Missouri House of Representatives approved House Bill 2634, a bill to remove Planned Parenthood clinics from Medicaid rolls, therefore making it illegal for clinics to receive state reimbursements for low-income patients.

Despite abortion being strictly prohibited in Missouri and Planned Parenthood clinics offering a variety of other services like cancer screenings and pregnancy planning, Republicans contend that they should not be in the state.

“This is not health care,” said Rep. Mazzie Christensen (R-Bethany). “These facilities should not be in our state and I’m sick and tired of hearing about it.”

The bill was passed on party lines by the state Senate earlier this month, despite an 11-hour filibuster by Democrats in the body. It was a similar story in the House, where the vast majority of “Yay” votes came from Republicans when the bill passed 106-48. HB 2634 will now be sent to Gov. Mike Parson (R), who is expected to sign it into law.

Republicans are also attempting to block a proposed ballot measure to restore reproductive rights into law in Missouri.
