GOP Kentucky lawmaker meets with pardoned Jan. 6 felon convicted of assaulting police: ‘Welcome home’
Last Saturday, Kentucky state Rep. Josh Calloway (R-Irvington) made an X post welcoming home a pardoned Jan. 6 felon, whose 14-year prison sentence was absolved by President Donald Trump.
Calloway described Peter Schwartz as a “political prisoner of the Biden regime” in the post.

According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Peter Schwartz was sentenced to over 14 years in prison after being found guilty of nine felonies and two misdemeanors for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021. Prosecutors said Schwartz used a folding chair and pepper spray to attack police officers, leading to charges including assaulting, resisting or impeding officers using a dangerous weapon.
Prior to Jan. 6, Schwartz reportedly had a criminal history of 38 felony convictions dating back to 1991. Schwartz was also reportedly on probation for domestic abuse when he showed up to the U.S. Capitol with a wooden tire knocker.
“Mr. Schwartz, dare I say, there are not many people who have come to this court with a criminal history like yours,” District Judge Amit Mehta said during Schwartz’s sentencing hearing in May 2023.
Calloway is a volunteer preacher has served Kentucky’s 10th Legislative District since 2021. In 2024, Calloway sponsored legislation to amend the Kentucky Constitution to allow public funds to be used for private charter schools. Calloway was also critical of Gov. Andy Beshear’s (D) efforts to ban conversion therapy for minors, a practice that attempts to change someone’s sexual or gender identity. The process incorporates a range of discredited practices that had been described as torture by survivors and experts.
