Zach Nunn falsely says One Big Beautiful Bill removes tax on Social Security benefits
During an interview with “Let’s Talk Greene County,” U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn (R-IA) falsely claimed that the One Big Beautiful Bill will feature no tax on Social Security benefits, despite numerous debunkings.
When asked about the topics discussed in his recent town hall event, Nunn touted provisions in the Republican spending bill that President Donald Trump signed into law in July. Nunn bragged about the financial impact of the Social Security provisions in the bill.
“We also talk about the impact of no tax on Social Security means for a community like Jefferson that has a number of folks who utilize Social Security to help take care of their health needs and their personal welfare,” Nunn said.
According to multiple fact checks, the claim that the One Big Beautiful Bill will make it so that 90% of Social Security beneficiaries no longer pay federal taxes on their benefits in not accurate.
“It’s simply not correct to say that there’s a provision in this bill that is going to eliminate the Social Security benefit tax for 90% of the population,” said Howard Gleckman, senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
In an interview with NBC News in July, Gleckman also said it is false to claim that the bill preserves the solvency of Social Security, as several provisions actually weaken the program’s funding.
PolitiFact also found that Trump’s promise that most people will not be taxed on their Social Security benefits is “mostly false,” since millions of Americans will still be taxed on their benefits in the bill’s final form.
Nunn did not respond to a request to comment on the discrepancy in his statement.
Last November, Nunn narrowly won a second term in Congress when he defeated Democratic challenger Lanon Baccam by 3.9 percentage points (15,784 votes). Cook Political Report currently rates Nunn’s chances of retaining Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District as “Lean Republican” for the 2026 midterms.
