U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has been single-handedly holding up hundreds of military promotions for months, and three Republicans running for the Senate in competitive races are indicating they would help Tuberville’s efforts if elected.

In Ohio, Secretary of State Frank LaRose is helming a campaign centered around opposing abortion, to little success. However, LaRose says that he supports Tuberville’s crusade against Department of Defense policies that he says “facilitate thousands of abortions a year with taxpayer dollars.”

“[Tuberville] is standing up for life and the Biden administration’s assault on the innocent, which is the same position I would support in the Senate,” LaRose told Politico in September.

Similarly, other Senate hopefuls like Montana candidate Tim Sheehy and Nevada candidate Sam Brown have been using Tuberville’s antics to raise money for their campaigns. According to a report from Punchbowl News, Brown’s donation page asked potential contributors if they support Tuberville “in his fight to stop military-funded abortion trips.”

Since the report came out in September, references to Tuberville’s name have been removed, but the question “Should the Pentagon pay for travel to get abortions?” remains on Brown’s page. The page also says that contributions will benefit the campaigns of Tim Sheehy in Montana, Sen. Tom Cotton in Arkansas and National Republican Senatorial Committee national committees in addition to Brown’s campaign.

Despite criticism from Democrats, Republicans and military leaders, Tuberville recently said that he will continue to block military promotions in opposition to abortion policies. After Tuberville held up an additional 61 promotions on Wednesday, Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) had critical words for his colleague on the Senate floor.

“I want the American people to know right now 376 promotions to one-, two-, three- and four-star generals and admirals are being held. It is estimated that by the end of this year, 89 percent of all general officer positions in the United States military will be affected by the current holds from Senator Tuberville … This is hugely disruptive to readiness,” Sullivan said.

Tuberville has contended that military readiness is not being disrupted because of his actions and that the conflict between Israel and Gaza is not affecting his decision to continue.
