Michigan Republican Senate candidate Nikki Snyder will appear at a back-to-school event next month at a gun range that used to employ one of the convicted co-conspirators who plotted to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D).

Last week, the Ingham County Republican Party announced a Sept. 13 event on its Facebook page last week that will be held at Huron Valley Guns in New Hudson. The State Board of Education member is set to speak alongside Linda Lee Tarver, a former school board candidate who protested at the Stop the Steal rally on Jan. 6, 2021 in Washington D.C. that evolved into the Capitol insurrection attempt.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign canceled a “Make America Great Again!” event at Huron Valley Guns in 2020 because the gun range previously employed one of the suspects involved with the alleged plot to kidnap Whitmer. Eric Trump was set to appear at the gun range before the campaign discovered the employee’s history. The store’s owner described the unidentified employee as a “kid” who would show up to work in “a lot of tactical gear.”

By that description, the former employee would either be Joe Morrison or Paul Bellar, who were sentenced to seven years and 10 years in prison respectively after a jury found them guilty of providing support for a terrorist act by holding a gun training lesson with other conspirators. The plot, led by Adam Fox, involved raiding the governor’s mansion, kidnapping Whitmer and sparking a civil war over the governor’s COVID-19 mandates.

Snyder has previously made comments about getting kids comfortable with guns so they’re “not so scary.” In the same comments, Snyder voiced her displeasure with gun control laws.

Snyder is trying to flip a U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), who decided not to seek a fifth term after the Democrats secured a state trifecta in last year’s midterms.
