A group of Minnesota Republican state senators have shown their priorities for the current legislative session by offering a bill that would use taxpayer funds to create a statue of right-wing provocateur Charlie Kirk.
Senate File 3777 is sponsored by five Republican state senators and would take $25,000 from the state’s arts and culture budget to construct a statue of Kirk on the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota, which is currently under siege by ICE.
Kirk’s ties to the state of Minnesota and its arts and culture are limited; in a 2021 speech, he claimed his family was originally from the state and praised Garrison Keillor. But he also cast aspersions on Minneapolis and called George Floyd a scumbag. Moreover, the speech occurred just nine months after Kirk tried to thwart the will of Minnesota voters by providing logistical support to the Jan. 6 attempted coup.
Neither Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party nor the Republican Party of Minnesota responded to a request for comment.
