Ron Johnson wants to restart Obamacare repeal process if GOP retakes control in 2022, 2024

On Breitbart News Radio Monday morning, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said the GOP should restart efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act if it retakes control of the White House and Congressional majorities by 2024.

After lambasting President Joe Biden for not uniting the country, Johnson told host Alex Marlow that the GOP should use potential upcoming Congressional majorities to obstruct Biden’s agenda and then use a potential 2024 presidential victory to reverse Democratic policies. One such policy is the ACA, sometimes referred as “Obamacare.”

“For example, if we were going to repeal and replace Obamacare — I think we still need to fix our health care system — need to have the plan ahead of time so that once we get in office, we can implement it immediately, not knock around like we did last time and fail,” Johnson said.

Since President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, Congressional Republicans attempted to repeal the ACA at least 70 times, according to a 2017 analysis by Newsweek. The GOP abandoned the effort after Democrats won the House majority in the 2018 midterm elections. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last July that 31 million Americans have health care coverage through the ACA, the most ever.

Restarting the effort to repeal the ACA is not one of Sen. Rick Scott’s (R-FL) infamous 11 points in his plan to “rescue America” that he published last month. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell disavowed the controversial agenda last week, which includes a plan to raise taxes for millions of Americans to “have skin in the game, even if a small amount.” However, Johnson said he supports “most” of Scott’s plan in the Breitbart interview.

Jake Wilkins, a spokesperson for Johnson, defended the senator’s comments on Twitter.

“There seem to be a lot of folks on Twitter Dot Com who are surprised that a Republican Senator who opposed Obamacare still doesn’t like Obamacare,” Wilkins wrote.
