A recent ProPublica investigation has discovered that — much like his Supreme Court colleague Justice Clarence Thomas — Justice Samuel Alito has received a generous gift from a high-value GOP donor.
In 2008, Alito went to a “luxury fishing lodge that charged more than $1,000 a day” with “Paul Singer, a hedge fund billionaire who has repeatedly asked the Supreme Court to rule in his favor in high-stakes business disputes,” the expose explains. Alito did not disclose these gifts
In the preceding years, “Singer’s hedge fund came before the court at least 10 times.” Alito failed to recuse himself in any of these cases.
Right before ProPublica released the report Tuesday, Alito denied any wrongdoing in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.
“ProPublica has leveled two charges against me: first, that I should have recused in matters in which an entity connected with Paul Singer was a party and, second, that I was obligated to list certain items as gifts on my 2008 Financial Disclose Report,” the justice wrote.
“Neither charge is valid.”
Since the Dobbs decision and the revelations about Clarence Thomas’ similar relationship with right-wing oligarch Harlan Crow, the approval rating of the Court has fallen to a paltry 41% — a record low, according to Gallup polling.
