In July 2022, 195 House Republicans voted against the Right to Contraception Act, a bill designed to codify birth control access into law. Democrats drafted the legislation after comments made by conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in his concurring opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson case. In the same decision that stripped away the federal right to abortion access, Thomas suggested the court should also look at cases which upheld the rights to contraception, same-sex marriage and same-sex activity.

Newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has also been scrutinized for extreme beliefs regarding abortion and contraception access.
