Pennsylvania Republicans jeer, leave statehouse floor in protest of officers who defended Capitol on Jan. 6
On Wednesday, several Republicans in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives walked out of the chamber when two U.S. Capitol officers were being honored, according to multiple representatives.
Today we welcomed two American heroes, Officer Harry Dunn @libradunn and Sergeant Aquilino Gonell to the Pennsylvania Capitol.
A number of House Republicans literally booed, hissed, and walked off the floor — there is no bottom. pic.twitter.com/HErtIEZGsr — Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (@malcolmkenyatta) June 5, 2024
Today, I joined @PaHouseDems to welcome Officers Harry Dunn & Aquilino Gonell. These US Capitol police officers bravely defended our democracy during the Jan 6 insurrection. Shamefully, some @PAHouseGOP walked out on these heroes.
The stakes this year are high. We won’t forget. pic.twitter.com/ncEN0cdGrD — Rep. Arvind Venkat, MD (@RepVenkat) June 5, 2024
Honored to meet former US Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell and Ofr. Harry Dunn as they were recognized by the #PAHouse. Both defended our Capitol on #Jan6.
Dumbfounded that many @PaHouseGOP disrespected these brave men by exiting the chamber during their recognition. Shameful pic.twitter.com/ADgyzOMFIy — Rep. Emily Kinkead (@RepKinkead) June 5, 2024
So now happening on the House floor.
We are welcoming two officers that protected our US Capitol and Democracy during the January 6 Insurrection. Want to take a guess which members (side of the aisle) got up and walked out in a sign of disrespect… — Jordan A. Harris (@RepHarris) June 5, 2024
Gonell responded to the boos on X by pointing out the contradiction of GOP members booing police officers while saying they support police.Word on the street that many @PAHouseGOP members stormed off the floor and one apparently yelled at the police officers calling them traitors https://t.co/W82rDj4mBt

Dunn and Gonell are also set to campaign for President Joe Biden in battleground states in the coming weeks. During the attack on Jan. 6, 114 police officers were reportedly injured; one died as a result of strokes from being pepper sprayed and four others committed suicide in the days and months that followed. Trump was indicted last August for his role in the insurrection and charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make false statements, obstruction of an official proceeding and inciting an insurrection. As of January, 1,265 people have been charged with crimes relating to the Jan. 6 insurrection. The @PAHouseGOP like many elected officials I helped protect and defend at the U.S. Capitol, have abandoned the truth/sided with those who attacked us, the police, while at the same time saying they support the police and the rule of law. I’m not buying your bridges. https://t.co/aAB62rPly3
