Sen. Ron Johnson blatantly lies, says Democrats have repeatedly tried to use fake electors (they haven’t)

During an interview on CNN Monday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) falsely claimed that Democrats have repeatedly attempted to use alternate slates of electors, using misleading examples to compare to Republican schemes to overturn the 2020 election results.

During an interview on CNN Monday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) falsely claimed that Democrats have repeatedly attempted to use alternate slates of electors, using misleading examples to compare to Republican schemes to overturn the 2020 election results.

CNN host Kaitlan Collins asked Johnson for his reaction to the recent lawsuit settlement where Wisconsin’s fake electors acknowledged that Joe Biden won the 2020 election. Johnson followed up on the interview by posting his “evidence” on X (formerly Twitter).

PolitiFact’s Ricardo Torres rated the claim “false” on Friday.

Johnson’s examples either fail to contain fake electors or incorrectly interpret election procedures. The senator also does not mention that in all of his examples, Democrats eventually conceded; many Republicans have still not conceded the 2020 election to Biden.

A Johnson spokesperson told Torres that the senator misspoke and meant to say that Democrats have challenged election results, which is much different than trying to overturn an election.

Evidence provided by the Jan. 6 House Committee proved that Johnson’s chief of staff exchanged text messages with one of former President Donald Trump’s lawyers about a plan for the senator to deliver a false slate of electors to then-Vice President Mike Pence.
