In an interview on The Marc Cox Morning Show on Thursday, Missouri Republican Senate frontrunner Eric Greitens referred to the Jan. 6 Capitol rioters as “grandparents” and “Vietnam veterans” looking to use the restroom.

“You know what else isn’t going to be heard tonight, which is a tremendous shame, is the tragedy of the political prisoners who are being held because of Jan. 6,” Greitens said. “There are stories after stories of citizens, good people who showed up because they were concerned about the election.”

Greitens goes on to allege that Capitol police officers openly invited people into the Capitol on Jan. 6 to use the bathroom. In actuality, several Capitol police officers were severely injured on Jan. 6, and one was beaten to death. Five officers on duty that day would later commit suicide in the months following the attack.

Greitens is a former Navy SEAL who served as Missouri’s 56th governor from 2017-2018. Less than a year and a half into is term, he was forced to resign amid a sexual misconduct scandal and failing to disclose campaign finances from political action committees. Greitens is also facing new allegations of spousal and child abuse, which led to many of his primary opponents to call for him to step aside or even face prison time.
