On Tuesday, far-right Republican and Donald Trump-affiliated businessman Bernie Moreno called for reparations for white people who died in the Civil War as he announced his candidacy for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio.

While speaking at his rally, Moreno reminisced about American history and how he thinks that because northerners died in the Civil War warrants white people getting reparations.

“That same group of people later, white people, died to free Black people,” Moreno said. “It’s never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America. That’s not talked about in schools very much, is it? They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country. Name another country that did that, freed slaves, that died to do that. You know, when they talk about reparations, where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of Black people? I know it’s not politically correct to say that, but we gotta stop being politically correct. We gotta call it how it is.”

Moreno, who emigrated to the U.S. from Colombia when he was five years old, did not comment on the decades-long effort for reparations for American slavery.

Moreno will attempt to get the GOP nomination to challenge incumbent Sen. Sherod Brown (D) in 2024. This isn’t the first time Moreno has run for the Senate, as he sought Ohio’s other Senate seat in 2022 but he dropped out of the Republican primary after a private meeting with Trump. Another Trump ally, J.D. Vance, went on to win that seat after defeating Democrat Tim Ryan.

Trump has also offered support for Moreno this time around, saying on his social media platform Truth Social last week that Moreno “would not be easy to beat.”

Before his career in politics, Moreno made millions in the auto industry with several luxury car dealerships across the U.S. under his ownership. He used much of his own money to run his campaign in 2022 and will likely do the same for his next bid.

Moreno will contend with Ohio state Sen. Matt Dolan in a GOP attempt to retake the majority in the Senate. Other rumored Republican candidates include Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and U.S. Rep. Warren Davidson.
