Wisconsin Dems criticize Eric Hovde for resurfaced comments condemning single parents

On Thursday, state Rep. Francesca Hong (D-Madison) and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin hosted a press call to criticize past remarks from GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde in which he condemned single parents.

On Thursday, state Rep. Francesca Hong (D-Madison) and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin hosted a press call to criticize past remarks from GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde in which he condemned single parents.

“These single parents, they’re working hard, and they’re kicking ass in their communities. And that’s why they’re tired. We are tired, and we are definitely tired of out-of-touch Eric Hovde’s of the world who don’t respect the work that every single parent in this state does every single day,” said Hong, a single mother, in the press call.

As noted in an article published by The 19th News, Hovde has stated during a 2012 primary debate that children born out of wedlock are on “a direct path to a life of poverty.” The data supporting his comments about the societal impact remains contentious. Other claims that Hovde has made about fraudulent use of food stamps by impoverished households lack robust evidence.

Wisconsin, a political swing state, has around 100,000 single mothers, making them a significant demographic in this upcoming election. Wisconsin’s race has the power to impact which party is in control of the Senate.

Hovde has since made no comments regarding these past statements, leaving voters wondering where his current position is.

“If Eric Hovde doesn’t respect us, looks down on us, or if he wants to hurt us, how can he possibly represent us in the Senate?” Hong asked to end the call.
