Democrat Lindsay James defeated Republican Joe Mitchell to win Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, flipping a seat Republicans had held since 2021. The Associated Press called the race at 11:19 p.m. CST on Nov. 3.

With more than 99% of votes counted as of Thursday, James had 171,512 votes, or 49.5%, to Mitchell’s 157,722, or 45.6%, according to unofficial AP results.

James, a state representative from Dubuque and Presbyterian minister, will replace Republican Ashley Hinson, who left the seat open to run for the U.S. Senate. Mitchell, a former Iowa state representative and Trump administration official, campaigned on lowering taxes, reducing government spending and supporting Iowa industries, including agriculture and ethanol.

The race was considered a toss-up and drew national attention as Democrats sought to flip Republican-held House seats. James’ campaign focused on affordability, health care and the effects of federal policies on Iowa families.

Hinson lost her Senate race to Democrat Josh Turek, who flipped the Republican-held seat.
