Report: Eric Hovde’s bank sued for elder abuse and wrongful death in a nursing home

Sunwest Bank, a Utah-based company owned by Wisconsin Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde, is the defendant in a lawsuit accusing a nursing home that is owned by the bank of elder abuse and wrongful death.

Sunwest Bank, a Utah-based company owned by Wisconsin Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde, is the defendant in a lawsuit accusing a nursing home that is owned by the bank of elder abuse and wrongful death.

According to The New York Times, the lawsuit was reportedly filed in March, just days before Hovde publicly stated that he doesn’t believe most people in nursing homes are “in a point to vote.”

The lawsuit stems from a series of incidents in 2022, a year after Sunwest seized an assisted living facility in Claremont, Calif. after the owners failed to repay a $6 million loan. A 94-year-old woman with dementia subsequently fell several times in the facility and eventually died from the injuries she sustained. The woman’s daughter filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Sunwest and the nursing home last month, claiming the facility’s staff failed to install and utilize the proper safety measures.

In a statement, Hovde’s campaign spokesman Ben Voelkel said there was “no basis” for the lawsuit and contended that a bank executive could not possibly be responsible for the actions a business made.

A recent poll from Marquette University Law school suggested Hovde’s opponent Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D) holds a double-digit lead in the demographic of voters over the age of 60.

On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris (D) spoke in La Crosse, Wis. about the Biden administration’s actions to expand affordable long-term health care in nursing homes. The Hovde campaign did not immediately respond for comment on the proposed nursing home regulations, which includes setting minimum staffing requirements and increasing pay for workers.
