Hovde campaign responds to new findings in nursing home documents
Eric Hovde’s campaign issued a response to Heartland Signal Thursday over new documents showing that his Sunwest Bank has the “exclusive right to control, manage and direct” a senior living home at the center of a lawsuit against the bank.

In recent months, Hovde and his team have been attempting to distance the candidate from any possible responsibility for the facility in wake of Sunwest being named a co-defendant in an elder abuse, negligence and wrongful death lawsuit.
Despite the operating agreement for Claremont Senior Living LLC proving that Sunwest — of which Hovde serves as the chairman and CEO — is the sole operator of the facility, Hovde’s spokesperson Ben Voeklel continued to claim Sunwest is not involved with managing the facility.
“The operating agreement is consistent what we have said all along: Eric Hovde and Sunwest Bank are not involved in managing the facility, which is why the frivolous lawsuit has been tossed out of court twice,” Voelkel said in an emailed statement to Heartland Signal. “If Heartland Signal were as capable of understanding legal documents as it is at spreading lies, they would know that.”
Hovde is on record casting doubt that people in nursing homes should be able to vote.

Hovde has struggled to gain ground in his effort to unseat incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D) in Wisconsin’s Senate race. Several controversies have plagued the West Coast banker, including his strong ties to California, his struggle to appeal to female voters and belittling comments towards different groups of people. Baldwin is set to give a speech on the last night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
