Perry Johnson’s ‘all-American’ Super Bowl ad uses footage from Dominican music festival

GOP gubernatorial candidate Perry Johnson has launched an ad to air prior to the Super Bowl urging viewers to turn off the NFL’s halftime show, which is headlined by Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny.

Johnson, who brands himself as the “Quality Guru,” encourages viewers to switch to Turning Point USA’s alternate halftime show, which features Michigan native and ardent Trump supporter Kid Rock, “for some great American entertainment during America’s game” — but the video clip behind that statement is of a music festival in the Dominican Republic.

“Glad you got the jokes we are hoping for as much attention as possible,” John Yob, a strategist helping the Johnson campaign, wrote in a statement.

The ad also shows a clip of Johnson shaking hands with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot to death in September. Johnson says he “knew Charlie Kirk,” and adds, “Now, there’s an American,” while an American flag is seen waving in the background.

The imagery is part of a broader backlash against the NFL’s decision to have Bad Bunny headline the halftime show, which many MAGA supporters have called un-American — even though Puerto Rico is an American territory and Bad Bunny is a U.S. citizen.

The Detroit News reported that the ad will begin airing in some Michigan markets immediately through the lead-up to the Super Bowl on Sunday night, including during NBC’s Super Bowl pre-game programming.
