Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski of Portage County has recently appeared in an advertisement for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in support of Kevin Coughlin, who is campaigning for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. This endorsement raises significant concerns given Zuchowski’s history of contentious statements and actions.
In the past month, the NRCC and House Republicans have faced criticism for featuring individuals with extreme views, including 9/11 conspiracy theorists, in their ads. By aligning with Zuchowski, the NRCC is once again accepting extremism in its ranks — embracing a figure whose behavior and rhetoric are deeply offensive, suggesting a willingness to associate with problematic individuals who engage in ethically questionable conduct.
Zuchowski’s notoriety escalated in September when he announced on Facebook his intention to track and record the names of residents who displayed Kamala Harris for President signs in their yards. This proposed action sparked outrage and was widely seen as a blatant violation of the constitutional rights of Portage County residents.
Further controversy surrounds Zuchowski’s reported connections to the Proud Boys, a designated hate group. He was seen displaying an emblem with the phrase “F— Around and Find Out,” a slogan commonly linked to this organization via the acronym “FAFO.” The Proud Boys are also widely seen as being heavily involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. Additionally, he was photographed holding a custom pickrick drumstick, reminiscent of those used during the Civil Rights movement to intimidate Black Americans. Zuchowski’s pickrick drumstick is signed by former Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox, who is widely seen as one of the most racist elected officials of the modern era and a staunch segregationist.
But it doesn’t end there — Zuchowski has also faced accusations of unethical behavior, including allegedly using inmate labor from the county jail to work on his re-election campaign. These actions raise significant ethical concerns about his leadership and treatment of vulnerable populations.
As the race for Ohio’s 13th Congressional District heats up, the implications of Bruce Zuchowski’s controversial behavior will likely play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative. With Kevin Coughlin’s campaign seemingly embracing Zuchowski’s polarizing persona, voters are faced with a critical decision about the values and leadership they want to see represented in their community. The NRCC’s choice to align with such problematic figures underscores a troubling trend, raising questions about the direction of leadership in Ohio.
